Greg Eldred is the owner of Indianapolis Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and has been training in Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for 36 years and teaching for 32 years. He is widely recognized as the first person to teach Gracie Jiu-Jitsu in central Indiana, helping introduce the art to the region during its early expansion in the United States.
Greg has been teaching Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in the Midwest since the early 1990s and has trained generations of students through his Indianapolis academy.
Greg began his training at the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Torrance, California in January 1991, where he spent three years studying under Rorion, Royce, Rickson, and Royler Gracie.
In 1993, Greg relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio, where he started one of the early Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Training Associations in the United States under Rorion and Royce Gracie. In 1996, he moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where he began teaching Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and helped establish the art in central Indiana.
In June 1999, Greg was promoted to Purple Belt by Royce Gracie after winning an eight-man, no-time-limit invitational tournament organized by Royce. Over the years he has had the opportunity to train with many of Grand Master Helio Gracie’s sons, including Rorion, Royce, Rickson, Royler, Relson, and Rolker Gracie.
In May 2001, Greg became a certified instructor and affiliate of Master Carlos “Caique” Elias, and in November 2005 he was promoted to Black Belt. Greg continues to train under Master Caique and regularly hosts him for seminars at his academy in Indianapolis.
In December 2024, Greg was promoted to 5th Degree Black Belt. He is certified by the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and his academy is also a certified affiliate of Rickson Gracie’s Jiu Jitsu Global Federation.
Outside of jiu-jitsu, Greg graduated from Purdue University in 1985 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology. During a 23-year professional career, he worked as an engineer at Hughes Aircraft Company in Southern California, and later held sales and marketing roles at Delphi Automotive Systems in Cincinnati and Kokomo, IN, and spent several years as a Systems Engineer developing automotive airbag control systems.
Greg’s engineering background influences his teaching style. He emphasizes understanding not only how techniques work, but why they work, and is known for explaining jiu-jitsu concepts in a logical and methodical way rooted in the Gracie lineage and the teachings of Master Caique.
Greg has been retired from engineering for several years and now operates his academy full-time. He and his wife Kim have three sons.
